  • Last night, I watched @hadaskleinman sing from her soul. As woman who grew up in a multi-faith family, I often find identity in the spiritual rather than the specific. Last night I was reminded about the purpose of community. Whether religious, atheist, academic, or geographical. Groups who share the energy of the heart heal together. My brother @wakingupwithryan lead us in a prayer. • His words: “Rosh Hashanah is the lunar New Year, & it’s taught that on Rosh Hashanah the gates of heaven open & begin the 10 days of awe. The 10 days when access to a divine plain becomes even more realized. And so, these last ten days may have felt amazing & they may have felt really rocky. Know that the rockiness IS that access to the divine that’s wanting to clear energy for each of us to be actualized. To be living the DNA that’s been with us always. To clear the stuff that’s getting in the way. So if we can take a breath & breathe all that in - that divinity that’s in us - & on the exhale let go of all the resistance? This time is when we talk with God, with the Universe, & we talk with our community & we talk with ourselves & we ask for forgiveness. We recognize that in our humanity we’ve made mistakes & that we release the guilt & judgement that we hold? That we may step into the new year free. I invite you to reflect on the last year & bring to mind beautiful times. The successes. The love. The intimacy. And also bring to mind the difficulties. The health issues of ourselves or our loved ones. The deaths. The upsets. The things that didn’t go our way. What if we can see all those things, now, as whatever our soul has needed to walk the path to finding ourselves? Maybe now we can find some gratitude. However challenging it may be, for the things that happened that hurt us. The things that were said or done that hurt us. Causing them to come to more attention. To our needs. To the people that we seek to become. What if we can release those judgments & those thoughts? Those stories that we’ve been telling about those situations? To not carry them any longer, into this new year? Let’s take a breath & let those things go. Now we can wake up.” • #hagsameah #yomtov ♥️

  • On Sunday night I had the supreme joy of looking to my left and seeing @hannah_gadsby. Right there! In the same room! I had to tell her what #Nanette meant to me. • Her courage at telling her story knocked the wind out of me when I watched it for the first time. Explaining what, as a comedian, laughter meant to her. But how damaging laughter that comes from reducing oneself, making oneself the butt of a joke before other people can do it to you, does to someone. What sexual assault does to someone. How our pain never leaves us. And how it factors into our legacy is both beyond our control and also squarely up to us. Both, and. • This woman’s @netflix special is a revelation. And a revolution. Hannah, thank you for being so gracious to each of us who had gratitude to share. I’m glad we’re no longer even one degree of @kevinbacon apart. And I’m sorry for standing behind @kevinbacon like a total creep so that I could fangirl you the moment he was done fanboying you. You’re a gem. ♥️ #Storytellers #ArtMatters

  • THIS. All of this. #Repost @cindi_leive ・・・ Twenty-seven years ago almost exactly, I sat glued to my TV along with the rest of America and watched Professor Anita Hill deliver searing, credible testimony about sexual harassment in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee. It was the first political proceeding I’d paid much attention to, and I was riveted—not just by her calm, poised demeanor but by the way she was dismissed, disregarded and smeared by the powerful senators who grilled her, the pundits who discussed her case on TV and the establishment in general. (The American Spectator famously called this accomplished lawyer “a little bit nutty and a little bit slutty.”) That weekend of hearings is part of what made me a feminist. Right now, as Professor Hill herself writes in @nytimes this morning, we’re in what feels like reruns, as Supreme Court Justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh stands accused of assaulting Christine Blasey Ford, now a professor of clinical psychology, when they were both teenagers. We won’t know more about the case and these charges until Professor Ford and Kavanaugh testify Monday—but that hasn’t stopped some Senators from jumping to tired old 1991-style conclusions already. (Senator Orrin Hatch—one of the OG questioners from 1991!—had one phone conversation with Kavanaugh yesterday and told reporters “he’s an honest man” and that Professor Ford must have been “mixed up.” He hadn’t even spoken to her yet!) The message to our Senate must be: DO BETTER. As Professor Hill writes: “In 1991, the phrase ‘they just don’t get it’ became a popular way of describing senators’ reaction to sexual violence. With years of hindsight, mounds of evidence of the…harm that sexual violence causes…as well as a Senate with more women than ever, ‘not getting it’ isn’t an option for our elected representatives. In 2018, our senators must get it right.” Or get out. Please, America: Show us you’ve evolved. 📷: Greg Gibson/AP

  • Call your Senators #BlockBrett 202-224-3121. • To quote @duca.lauren ”It seems to me that when Brett Kavanaugh attempted to deny a 17-year-old immigrant an abortion, he believed that the decisions you make as a minor ought to have lifelong consequences. Let's treat him the same way.” YUP. • And. As pointed out by many activists I respect today... Anyone who thinks a powerful (white) man “was just a kid” when established his pattern of desire to control women — ie. his stance on EVERYTHING having to do with our bodies including birth control. Brett? It’s NOT an “abortion inducing medication” as you stated in your SCOTUS testimony. Science. Medicine. Try it. — but a young (black) boy shot and killed at 17 (Trayvon) or 12 (Tamir) was a “thug who got what he deserved?” Nope. No. Your double standard is showing. • There are PLENTY of qualified judges out there who don’t have a lifelong pattern of dominating women. Like who? Like Merrick Garland, for example. Just sayin’. #StopKavanaugh 📷 @mspackyetti & @michaelskolnik • UPDATE. Turning the comments off. Because facts and timelines seem irrelevant to people who want to spew vitriol on the internet and this is why we can’t have nice things. My most recent post is for all of you. Wake up.

  • Today was a good day. It’s an honor and mission to support the National @womenshistory Museum organization and effort! • Did you know that according to the International Association of Women’s Museums there is no comprehensive museum anywhere in the U.S. solely dedicated to women’s history?? • According to the Architect of the Capitol, of the 100 statues in the U.S. Capitol’s National Statuary Hall Collection, only 9 are women. • On average, only 14 percent of the figures in U.S. history textbooks are women, and most of those are relegated to sidebars. (And that % may go down AHEM Texas I’m looking at you for deciding to REMOVE Hellen Keller and Hilary Clinton from your school books. Erasing the legacies of women who’ve shaped this country is wrong. TX sisters please stand up!) • Of the 5,575 outdoor sculpture portraits of historical figures in the United States, 559 portray women, a mere 10% of all statues, according to the Smithsonian American Art Museum's online inventories catalog. • Our stories deserve to be told. Fully. Complexly. And authentically. We deserve that representation. We may be 51% of the world’s population, but when we’re not represented we have no examples. If we can’t see it, we won’t know how to BE it. • It was so special to watch my pals @gabunion, @kristenanniebell, and @osopepatrisse be honored today. And the icon Kathy Bates!! It made me pinch myself that I received an award at this lunch a few years ago. What an amazing group of women to find myself among... What an honor. #sheroes #WomensHistoryMuseum ALSO @iamavoter #IAmAVoter #DontYouWannaBeAVoterToo

  • Mood AF @iamavoter • New York! You have an election today! All the info is in my stories. GET OUT AND VOTE! • And if you believe in subways that work, healthcare, public schools, women who work for the people, campaign finance reform, legalizing marijuana (to make that tax money and pay for those schools, as a serious racial justice issue, and more) and rent control — I used to pay rent in NY and that issue is no joke — for the people!? Well then I’m sure you love @cynthiaenixon for NY just like I do! @zephyrteachout too! But no matter WHAT your most important issues are (though I can’t imagine anyone who hates that badass list) go vote! ✌🏼♥️✔️ #IHeartNY #PartTimeResident #FullTimeLove
