I know stressing about it won't do any good, so I'm working on it 🎃 I thought I'd pop in and share a couple of @arrowvideo releases I've added to my collection. I was ecstatic when they announced Heathers. I pre-ordered on the spot! I've been waiting for FYE to put this Re-Animator steel book on sale and it was half off this weekend, so I had to snag one! 💉💚

  • I’ve been on a Casey Affleck stint lately, both in front of and behind the camera. He’s a really interesting actor, with an understated, searing emotionality that I haven’t seen a lot before. He’s got a unique ability to be both reserved and extremely intense in the same breath, and I think Gone Baby Gone (directed by his brother Ben, a better director than actor in my mind) is pretty much the epitome of what I like about his style (Manchester By the Sea is anther great example). This film is marvelous both technically and emotionally. The film never takes the easy route, and though I did find the way everything unraveled was a bit contrived, it still packed the intended punch. Morgan Freeman is his typical excellent self, and of course we can’t forget Michelle Monaghan in what is likely my favorite performance of hers. Great film, great cast, solid replay value. • So I finally got around to watching Moonlight, and I really enjoyed it. I’d have to say it’s possible that the hype and time since release may have cooled my reaction a bit, as I found it to be just good. Not great, or best picture status, but good. The performances were the real highlight, with the words achingly beautiful, raw, authentic, and more all sounding pretty inadequate. This is some of the finest acting I’ve seen in any film. The story itself felt extremely slice of life (in this case three different slices), and that kind of narrative approach has never really “worked” for me, so it took me out of the picture a bit. The pacing was pitch perfect, moving from one life phase to the next with fluidity and again, that word authentic. All of that said, this was a fine film, and one I would recommend to everyone at least once. • First time watching You Were Never Really Here since I saw it at the Leeds International Film Festival last year and it still blows my mind how great a movie this is. Lynn Ramsey's film is a bonafide masterpiece that is perfectly shot and directed, along with a tour de force performance from Joaquin Phoenix which definitely deserved an Oscar nomination and Jonny Greenwood's pumping film score. The film is absolutely perfect in every way. There's the bare bones in dialogue and when there is it's just there to hammer the story forward. It's a brutal film yet most of the brutality is off to the left or right of screen so that most of what happens is up to the viewer to visualise. Then there is the multiple layers to the film that serve as the back story to Joe's (Phoenix) disturbing past. From his childhood to his army and police career we find out that Joe is fighting with his inner demons and is on the verge of suicide....only that saving innocent girls is his saviour. Oh, and that underwater scene takes my breath away. It's such a beautifully shot scene it highlights why I love film so much. You Were Never Really Here is such a great piece of cinema and a film that I no doubt will return to time and time again. 10/10. #youwereneverreallyhere #filmdiary #moviediary #movielog #justwatched #bluraycollection #bluraycollector #blurayaddict #film #filmcollector #filmcollection #filmbuff #movie #moviecollection #moviecollector #hometheatre #homecinema #hometheater

  • 🎥 A Simple Favor (2018) The title may say simple, but this movie is anything but. Paul Feig did a very good job in placing breadcrumbs around to connect a ball of strings. The script is decent to say the least. The characters were very well portrayed by a powerful trio of Anna Kendrick, Blake Lively, and Henry Golding. Each play into the strengths of the actors and didn't necessarily become someone new. This movie is definitely not the best movie of the year, or even of the month. But it's still worth watching if you're into that type of movies. MB Rating: 6:/10

  • Back to my top 25! . . Number 12: Logan (2017) Director: James Mangold Favorite quote: “So...this is what it feels like.” . . This movie is my favorite Marvel film. Above any MCU film or otherwise. It is the PERFECT ending for Professor X and Logan. I absolutely love the western tone of the whole film and how brutal it is. Not just in it’s action, but in the interactions between characters. The whole movie is just so emotional and visceral. Also, the dynamic/teamwork between Logan and Laura is worth a watch in and of itself. This one is truly special and a masterpiece. . . 🎬My Rating: 9.5/10🎬

  • : THE LIVING COFFIN (1959) aka El Grito De La Muerte Mexico - 71 minutes. . MY REVIEW: Serviceable late-night B-movie fodder that takes an older style traditional Western idea and combines it with the widespread Hispanic supernatural legend of La Llorona, The Crying Woman. The old dead gal does put in a few appearances. And then there are the coffins in a shadowy crypt equipped with an alarm so the dead can alert the living if any problems occur. All part of the fun...enjoyable atmospheric "spookery" but I wouldn't call it scary really. . The film is an odd mix. Added to the incorporated horror legend you have the lone cowboy hero (he rides back and forth a lot) and his sidekick who is more Lou Costello than Tonto. Then there is the hero's incredibly smart white horse. A horse that would make Lassie drool with jealousy. An interesting essay in the extras points out that, like other Mexican Horror-Westerns of the period, The Living Coffin falls in line with "Scooby Doo Syndrome." I won't explain that further but it does make sense once you see the film. . Pretty decent color print (all things considered) with easy to read English subtitles. This movie may be hard to find as I believe all the Casanegra Presents titles are out of print. . Your mileage may vary depending on mood and to what extent critical faculties have shut down to be replaced by tired eyes and a goofy smile. . 6 out of 10
