We didn't get the Bluray only the DVD, so I found it for a decent price on Ebay.
Never read the book and I was unsure about the movie.
Now, what made me buy it? That little detail I found out about the movie that people didn't like - it's not the only thing novel readers didn't like but it was the point that I actually liked without having watched it: they stripped the story of it's christian religion elements and made the spiritual parts more adaptable to other religions. Just like the cast which is very diverse, the "religious" elements are meant to be for everyone.
Now, I like e.g. the Narnia movies but christian message/metaphores in these are pretty boderline. ... so, usually not my cup of tea when it's pushing a christian message (although the influence for Jesus' message, if true what some historians think, is sort of "hilarious"). So, it's a bit of an interest for a movie underdog.
And I am totally exited for Michael Peña, no matter how short the role, as the "grandfather" of Pennywise. 😁
Unfriended - Horror/Drama/Mystery
OVERALL: 6/10 “Above-Average” Film • Unfriended- A group of classmates are forced to confront their darkest secrets and lies via a video chat at the behest of a former classmate who committed suicide. • POSITIVES: The entire movie is told through a video chat screen and it’s really original and well crafted | The acting is very solid and creates a lot of tension in such an unusual horror environment | The script (it’s mostly improvisation) is believable and pretty good | Some of the scares work well enough | The characters and actions of them are all very believable and well executed | The gore is appreciated and the kills are well done (one in particular by the end was fantastic, involving a throat) | Lastly, the depth of the characters revealed throughout the film is really intriguing and plays well into the drama • NEGATIVES: The other half of the scares don’t work very well | There are long stretches of silence and typing that bore the viewer | The movie becomes mostly drama by the end and while it’s fine, it sorely lacks a lot of scares and tension | Because it’s all shot through a computer screen, the “lag” that they put in can be a bit unwanted and annoying | Most of this movie is exposition regarding the events that take place before the film and yes it’s needed, but not in the large capacity represented here | Lastly, and it’s a small thing, why exit the computer screen for the last scare? There was no reason for it. • CONCLUSION: Unfriended is an original concept executed well with drama and a few good kills but ultimately breaks down into far too much teen drama and the actual concept of the film lended into its weaknesses as well. I like this movie and it’s worth a cheap watch if you get the chance to see it. Just know it will be drama filled by the conclusion and focuses less on the horror aspects.
