Completed : Ninja Gaiden Sigma
An updated remaster of the original Xbox classic Ninja Gaiden Black.
Had this game for some time now, kept skipping to others fearing it would be a flashback of the nes-era ninja gaiden game which I was never able to complete in spite of being my childhood favorite.
Some games not only test your skills as a gamer but something deep within you.
Ninja gaiden is one of those few games where the difficulty is never artificial but simply down to pure combat.
To heat up things further, every couple of times you die it asks you to abandon the way of the ninja switching to ninja dog difficulty
which I resisted all the way after countless deaths and re tries.
The game mainly focuses on combat & some over-precise platforming yet there was sufficient variety and decent progression to keep things fresh & always engaging.
The combat even today feels deep and very smooth with a steep learning curve.
Gradually mastering enemy patterns and combos to attack just at the right time while at all other times trying to avoid taking hits was extremely satisfying especially when chained with the finishing ultimate techniques using which was a gamble in itself.
And who doesn't love epic boss battles which were never short on quantity as well as quality and could account for hours of agony or hardly a minute of conquest.
The system of Non replenishing health consumables was frustrating to start with, if not managed properly could be a game breaker at any point.
The game does have other issues with camera getting stuck & lack of some serious thought into level design where you are either backtracking or circling the same areas just to unlock another part.
Although the game doesn't do anything ground breaking & is a bit short on a few fronts , it stays true to its roots and delivers on what it offers : a linear, unforgiving and fast paced hack and slash video game that finds a great balance between fun, challenge and reward.
